AMBODE SHUTS DOWN MILE 12 MARKET

Following a dispute between community members of Ketu community in Mile 12 area of Lagos on Wednesday, which degenerated into a bloody clash on Thursday, the Executive Governor of Lagos State has ordered for the temporary close of the popular Mile 12 market.

The dispute degenerated into violence mid day on thursday as the members of the community clashed over a cause that is yet to be ascertained with three persons already reported dead and properties destroyed.

In swift reaction to this, the governor of Lagos State ordered the clamp down on activities temporarily in the market as he reassures of his government’s will to ensure an all-accomodating Lagos. He made this known in a press release spontaneously in reaction to the incident. Extracts of his speech can be found below:

“Yesterday there was a dispute between members of the Mile 12 Community in Ketu. The Police and other security services were called in to restore calm and order in the community and the dispute appeared to have subsided”

“Today, I have just been informed that some miscreants and criminal elements have exploited that dispute to cause a breakdown of law and order within the area.

Ambode was quoted as saying: “These type of clashes do occur from time to time in a multi-ethnic city like Lagos and the Government has always responded appropriately. The public is hereby assured that we will not shy away from our responsibilities to protect lives and property and will deal decisively with those criminal elements who fan embers of ethnic strife”

He then went on to say that: ” In order to further restore calm, I have ordered that mile 12 market be temporarily closed and urge traders, community leaders and other stakeholders to eschew violence and be calm and law abiding”

In addition to the closure of the market, temporary restriction of movement has been placed within the following streets:

Oniyanri Street
Maidan Street
Agiliti 1
Agiliti 2

He also assured Lagosians that the state is home to every tribe and ethnic group and nobody should give this disturbance any ethnic coloration whatsoever.
