THIS DAY IN HISTORY!
This day, 14th of February in 1929, it was the accidental discovery of Penicillin by the British bacteriologist, Sir Alexander Fleming. while researching on influenza, he noted that a mold fell upon his uncovered plate of Staphylococcus bacteria and killed them all. The mold was latter found to be Penicillium notatum thus leading to the product penicillin!
On this same Day, 14/02 in 1989, the Iranian leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini ordered a death sentence on Salman Rushdie for his highly controversial and parodic novel – Satanic verses which brought about protest and indignation in many Islamic countries. in addition, Khomeini promised a bounty in excess of $1 million on Rushdie’s head. Thus forcing the latter into a six year exile!
Also on this Day, February 14, 2011, the University of Lagos Community was put into shock as two students were gunned down at Shodeinde hall by unknown cult members. The crisis errupted at a late night Valentine celebration outside the hall when the deceased (likely cult members) were accused of snatching the “big boys ladies” and were thus rewarded with two gun shots!
